A school that focuses on rigorous learning. A school where students have the freedom to explore ideas, create, and encouraged to be curious. Imagine a school where students are challenged to build a better understanding of the concepts they learn.
Imagine a school that prioritizes the freedom to ask questions, find answers and share results of successes and failures. A school that encourages the freedom to agree and disagree. A school that is a community for learners who are excited to learn. A school where the first question asked is “Will this improve student understanding and their ability to connect with the world around them?” Imagine Freedom Christian Academy...
Freedom Christian Academy offers kids a paradigm shift in education. We’re not just interested in “doing school” and checking the boxes, which has been the status quo for the past century in education. We’re interested in making sure that the formative years of a child’s education will set the foundation for a lifetime of learning.
We allow our students the freedom to develop thinking skills and confidence. We give them the freedom to be curious and the time to ask questions. We also focus on robust instructional structures that facilitate the development of conceptual understanding. We want children to be active participants in their own learning by explicitly teaching the importance of being curious, hard work, critical listening, debate, argumentation, and working alongside others.
Finally our philosophy toward homework, in-school learning opportunities, and out-of-school learning opportunities continues our commitment to taking charge of your own learning.
Our academic blocks are: math, reading & writing, science, history, and Bible. This focused academic footprint means parents have the opportunity to personalize the rest of their child’s education. Students have time for a drama production, a favorite sport, a piano lesson or skateboarding. You know your child and his or her interests and passions. With academics taken care of by Freedom, you can add just the right amount of art, music, theater, or sports experiences and keep your child’s week more balanced.
We focus on hands on and minds on learning. We focus on deep learning and thinking within the concepts to be learned. We constantly ask ourselves, “Will this improve student understanding and their ability to connect with the world around them?” “Is this the richest, most challenging idea within a subject that we can bring to the kids?”
Freedom learners work in mixed-age learning groups. Each group is typically spread over 3 grades levels. Mixed-ages allows us to let go of assumptions related to ages and grade levels. It also ensures that all children are reaching toward the highest expectations. We don’t want to limit kids because “you’re in 2nd grade and you don’t learn that until 3rd grade.” We want all students stretching towards the highest end of the group. And highest doesn’t always mean oldest.
Each group typically operates as a learning community across all subject areas. Groups don’t necessarily stay together for the entire year. Sometimes individual students are moved as their needs may change. We are all about flexibility and making changes for student success.
From 8:30AM - 3:00 PM on Monday - Thursday and 8:30 AM-12:00 PM on Fridays we are working hard at Freedom. Unlike many schools, we won’t waste or spend our academic minutes on busy work. Most academic blocks are two hours long, and with 2 blocks, a day we have the opportunity for deeper, more sustained learning.
Our 4 1/2 day schedule is purposeful. Friday mornings will be a time for electives like computer science, drama production, debate, builds days, etc. Friday afternoon is a time for parents to decide how to enrich their child whether through sports or music lessons, trips to museums, projects based on a kid’s passions or some needed free time playing outside on a lovely day. Friday afternoon is a great time for students to continue their own learning.
